This online course will allow primary care physicians and general practitioners to enhance their knowledge and skills on the prevention, early detection and management of diabetes.

  • Review the pathogenesis of diabetes

  • Identify the clinical signs and symptoms of diabetes
  • Describe the various methods and criteria used for the diagnosis of diabetes
  • Define the clinical assessment of people with diabetes
  • Summarise the glycaemic targets for different populations of people with diabetes

  • Describe the key recommendations for lifestyle modifications in diabetes management
  • Describe the goals of nutrition therapy
  • Discuss the impact of nutrition therapy and physical activity on diabetes management
  • Emphasise the importance of primary care physicians’ role in promoting non-pharmacological management of diabetes

  • List the evidence-based clinical practice recommendations on prevention, diagnosis and management of T2D at primary care level
  • Discuss the recommendations on lifestyle and pharmacological management of T2D
  • Understand the management of T2D with complications, in special population, at-risk individuals and their referral

  • Describe the pharmacology of oral glucose-lowering medications in diabetes
  • Describe the application of various oral glucose-lowering medications in clinical practice
  • Discuss the guidelines-based approach in choosing oral glucose-lowering medications in the management of diabetes

  • Describe the history of insulin and its evolution
  • Discuss the types of insulin and appraise their pharmacokinetics
  • Discuss analogues, premix insulin and newer insulins
  • Describe administration of insulin
  • Discuss insulin therapy, its initiation and intensification
Learning Objectives:

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Define pre-exisiting diabetes (PEDM) also known as pregestational diabetes and describe the maternal and foetal risks associated with PEDM
  • Enlist various elements of preconception care
  • Describe the glycaemic requirements before, during and after pregnancy
  • Analyse the management strategies for optimum glycaemic control

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiological trend of gestational diabetes mellitus
  • Describe the clinical manifestation of gestational diabetes mellitus
  • Discuss screening methods for gestational diabetes mellitus
  • Describe the management of gestational diabetes mellitus

Certificate

Leaners who complete all the course modules and the final assessment will receive an offical IDF Certificate and eight European CME credits.

An IDF ‘Certificate of Achievement’ will be awarded to learners who complete all course modules and pass the final assessment with a score of at least 80%. An IDF ‘Certificate of Participation’ will be awarded to learners who score less than 80% in the final assessment after second attempt.
